What is an EMG?
Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them (motor neurons).
Motor neurons transmit electrical signals that cause muscles to contract. An EMG translates these signals into graphs, sounds or numerical values that a specialist interprets.
An EMG uses tiny devices called electrodes to transmit or detect electrical signals.
During a needle EMG, a needle electrode inserted directly into a muscle records the electrical activity in that muscle.
A nerve conduction study, another part of an EMG, uses electrodes taped to the skin (surface electrodes) to measure the speed and strength of signals traveling between two or more points.
EMG results can reveal nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction or problems with nerve-to-muscle signal transmission.”

What is interventional pain management?
Interventional pain management is a special discipline in medicine that utilizes advanced diagnostic imaging and focused injections or procedures to treat and manage chronic pain. There are basically two types of pain management. The first is medical pain management. Medical pain management treats the symptoms of pain with pharmaceuticals. This can work very well for many inflammatory processes but when pain persists and becomes chronic more work needs to be done on diagnosing the root cause of the problem.
This is when interventional pain management comes into play. Interventional pain management begins with identifying the root cause of pain through advanced diagnostic imaging and then delivering one or more therapeutic injections directly to the area of injury or pathology. It is frequently employed when conservative, medical management has failed to bring relief, or prior to pursuing surgery.
Many different types of procedures and injections are available in interventional pain treatment. The correct approach will depend upon your symptoms and proper diagnosis. For many, interventional pain treatments are an effective alternative to surgical intervention and the means of regaining a pain-free life. However, not all interventional pain treatments achieve the desired result. It is important for patients to understand other procedures including surgery may still be necessary.
